4G or WiFi Solar Camera: Which Fits Your Property?
4G or WiFi solar camera? Run two quick tests at the install spot, compare running costs, and choose the connection that will actually hold.

What matters in practice:
- Test the spot before you buy: play a video on WiFi there, then run a speed test on mobile data at mounting height.
- A camera holds signal worse than a phone. If the spot is only just usable for your phone, it is probably too weak for a camera.
- 4G needs a compatible SIM and a data plan; WiFi needs your router alive. Power cuts decide this more often than price does.
You have decided you want a camera where there is no socket. Now comes the choice that causes the most returns and complaints: 4G or WiFi. Choose wrongly and you end up with a camera that keeps disconnecting, or a monthly data bill you didn't plan for. Choose well and it runs quietly for years.
The short answer
If your WiFi reaches the install spot with a strong signal, buy WiFi. If it doesn't, or you have no internet, buy 4G. The spot decides the camera, not the other way round.
Do this test before you buy anything
Stand exactly where the camera will be mounted, at the height it will sit, and test two things on your phone.
- WiFi test: connect to your WiFi and play a video. If it stalls or the signal bars are low, a WiFi camera will struggle there as well.
- Mobile test: check your signal bars and run a video call or speed test on mobile data. If this is weak, a 4G camera will struggle.
A camera is usually weaker than a phone at holding a signal, so a spot that is only just usable for your phone is probably too weak for a camera.
Side by side
| 4G solar | WiFi solar | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs internet at home | No | Yes |
| Works far from the house | Yes, with mobile signal | No, limited by router range |
| Running cost | SIM data plan | None |
| Upfront price | Higher | Lower |
| Live viewing | Uses mobile data | Smooth on strong WiFi |
| Works in a power cut | Yes | Only if the router has backup power |
| Best for | Farms, gates, remote land | Homes, compounds, gardens |
Choose 4G if
- The camera sits well away from your router, such as at a gate, field or boundary
- You have no home internet
- You are watching a farm, plantation, store, yard or building site
- You want the camera to keep working even if the house power and router are off
Choose WiFi if
- Your router reaches the spot with a strong signal
- You want no monthly data cost
- You mainly want to protect the house, driveway or compound
The middle option: extend your WiFi
If the spot is only slightly too far for WiFi, a WiFi extender, mesh node or outdoor access point near the spot can fix it. This is often cheaper than a 4G camera plus a data plan. The catch is that the extender needs power and a good link back to the router, so it only helps if you have power halfway.
Hidden costs to think about
| Cost | 4G | WiFi |
|---|---|---|
| SIM and data | Yes, monthly or per bundle | No |
| Router backup power | Not needed | Recommended, for power cuts |
| Extender or access point | Not needed | Sometimes needed |
| Cloud storage | Optional | Optional |
Common mistakes
- Buying WiFi because it is cheaper, then discovering the signal doesn't reach
- Buying 4G without checking which network has the best signal at the spot
- Assuming any SIM works, when some cameras only support certain networks or bands
- Leaving live view running and using up the data bundle
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my phone's SIM card? Usually you need a separate SIM, and it must be active, unlocked and compatible with the camera's supported bands.
Which network should I choose? The one with the best signal at the install spot. Test several SIMs on a phone if you can.
Can a camera switch between WiFi and 4G? Some models offer both. They are handy when WiFi is unreliable, but cost more.
Our advice: don't pay for 4G if you don't need it, and don't save money on WiFi if it won't reach. Tell us the distance from your router and we'll tell you which one to buy.
