Wi-Fi 6 for Video-Call Offices
How Wi-Fi 6 improves video calls in busy offices.

What matters in practice:
- Latency, jitter and packet loss break calls — not the headline speed on the box.
- Wi-Fi 6's scheduling helps most when many colleagues call at once, and only Wi-Fi 6 devices benefit fully.
- Check your upload speed, and wire the meeting-room machines to free airtime for everyone else.
Zoom, Teams and Google Meet punish weak networks. A call that works alone can freeze when ten colleagues join calls at the same time.
What breaks video calls
- Latency: the delay between speaking and being heard.
- Jitter: variation in delay, which causes choppy audio.
- Packet loss: missing data that causes freezing.
These are caused by interference, distance, overloaded access points and congested internet links.
How Wi-Fi 6 helps
- OFDMA schedules many small transmissions together, reducing waiting.
- Uplink MU-MIMO helps multiple users send video at once.
- BSS colouring reduces interference from nearby networks.
- Better efficiency in dense offices, since the network handles many clients with less contention.
The gains require Wi-Fi 6 laptops and phones. Older devices still work but see less benefit.
Bandwidth numbers
A video call typically needs a few Mbps up and down per participant. Ten simultaneous calls therefore need a healthy connection in both directions. Many plans have much lower upload than download speed, so check the upload number.
Settings that help
- Use 5 GHz for laptops and keep 2.4 GHz for older devices.
- Enable QoS or WMM so voice and video are prioritised.
- Use 20 or 40 MHz channels on 2.4 GHz and 40 or 80 MHz on 5 GHz in busy spaces.
- Make sure neighbouring access points are not on the same channel.
Use cables where it counts
Plug desktop PCs, meeting-room computers and conference systems into Ethernet. Every wired device frees airtime for wireless users.
A simple test
Run a 10-minute call while walking through the office with a phone, and note where audio drops. Repeat at peak time. Use the results to move or add access points.
