Is Wi-Fi 7 Worth It in Uganda?
Wi-Fi 7 sounds impressive, but most Ugandan homes won't benefit yet. Here's why and when that changes.

What matters in practice:
- Your internet plan and your devices decide what you gain — a Wi-Fi 7 router talking to a Wi-Fi 5 phone behaves like a Wi-Fi 5 connection.
- The headline features live on 6 GHz, whose legal availability in Uganda must be confirmed with the UCC.
- Coverage, backup power and a better plan beat a router upgrade for most homes and businesses here.
Wi-Fi 7 is the newest standard, and routers advertising it are appearing in shops. It is genuinely better technology. But better technology is not the same as a better purchase for you today.
What Wi-Fi 7 actually adds
- 320 MHz channels: twice the width of the widest Wi-Fi 6 channel, but only on the 6 GHz band.
- 4096-QAM: about 20 percent more data per transmission than Wi-Fi 6, when signal is excellent.
- Multi-Link Operation (MLO): a device connects on two bands at once, improving reliability and cutting latency.
- Better handling of interference through smarter use of the spectrum.
Why most people won't notice
- Your internet plan is the ceiling. If you have a plan well below a gigabit, Wi-Fi 6 already exceeds it.
- Your devices decide the link. A Wi-Fi 7 router talking to a phone that only supports Wi-Fi 5 or 6 behaves like a Wi-Fi 5 or 6 connection. Most budget phones and older laptops do not support Wi-Fi 7.
- The best features live on 6 GHz, whose legal availability in Uganda must be confirmed with UCC — see The 6 GHz Band in Uganda.
- Walls cut 6 GHz hard. In brick and concrete homes, the advantage fades quickly with distance.
Who might benefit
- Homes with fast fibre and flagship phones or laptops that support Wi-Fi 7
- Creators moving large files across a local network
- Gamers and VR users who want the lowest latency
- Anyone buying a router they plan to keep for six or more years
Who should skip it
- Households on mobile data or basic fibre plans
- Homes full of budget phones and older TVs
- Small businesses whose main need is reliable coverage rather than peak speed
Our verdict
For most homes and businesses in Uganda, a good Wi-Fi 6 setup placed well will outperform a Wi-Fi 7 router placed badly. Put your money into coverage, backup power and a better internet plan first. Revisit Wi-Fi 7 when your devices and your plan can use it.
