How Long Should You Keep Home CCTV Footage?

What matters in practice:

  • 14 to 30 days suits most homes. Most incidents are noticed within days, and 30 days covers a holiday away.
  • Export, don't rely on the recorder. Footage left on the recorder is eventually overwritten — save important clips to a USB drive the same day.
  • Retention is limited by storage. Work out the drive size your chosen number of days needs with the storage formula.

There is no single correct answer, but there are sensible defaults for homes.

What most homes need

For most households, 14 to 30 days of footage is plenty. Many incidents are noticed within a few days, such as a parcel theft, a damaged car or a visitor you didn't expect. Thirty days gives a comfortable buffer if you are away on holiday.

Situation Suggested retention
Normal home use 14–30 days
Frequently away or travelling 30–60 days
Ongoing dispute or neighbour problems Keep relevant clips indefinitely
After an incident Export and save the relevant clips straight away

Export, don't rely on the recorder

When something happens, don't leave footage on the recorder, where it will eventually be overwritten. Export the relevant clips to a USB drive and back them up elsewhere. Note the date, time and camera name for each clip.

Privacy considerations

  • Point cameras at your own property where possible. Footage that captures neighbours' gardens, windows or public roads may bring legal obligations in some countries.
  • Tell people. A visible sign is good practice.
  • Don't keep footage longer than you need. Shorter retention reduces risk.
  • Secure access. Use a strong password, and don't share login details widely.
  • Check local rules. Data protection and surveillance laws vary by country, so look up the rules where you live.

Matching retention to your drive

Retention is limited by storage. Use the formula in how much storage do you need for your CCTV system to find the drive size that holds your chosen number of days, or check it against our CCTV storage calculator.

Scenarios and what to do

A parcel goes missing. Check footage from the delivery window the same day, export the clip, and share it with the courier or the police if required.

Your car is damaged outside. Export the footage immediately, since road-facing cameras often record busy scenes that fill space and overwrite quickly. Note the date, time and the camera.

You return from a two-week holiday. If your retention is only 14 days, the first days of the trip may already be gone. Consider switching to 30 days or more before you travel, or enabling cloud alerts for motion.

A neighbour dispute. Keep the relevant clips, but don't share them publicly. Stick to what is necessary, and seek advice if legal action is possible.

How to export footage correctly

  1. Find the camera and time range in playback.
  2. Choose a slightly wider window than the event, with a minute or two either side.
  3. Export to a USB drive, in the recorder's native format and, if possible, a common format such as MP4.
  4. Copy the native player to the drive too, in case the file doesn't open elsewhere.
  5. Keep a second copy, and note the export time and who made it.

Keeping footage secure

  • Use strong, unique passwords for the recorder and any app.
  • Turn off remote access you don't use.
  • Limit who in the household can view or delete recordings.
  • Never post footage showing other people's faces or children online without a good reason.

The bottom line

Thirty days is a good default for homes. Whatever you choose, save important clips quickly and handle other people's footage responsibly. If the recorder starts dropping footage before the retention period is up, why your security camera stopped recording walks through the usual causes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cameras do I need for my business premises?▼
The number of cameras depends on your property size and security needs, typically 4-8 cameras for small businesses and 16-32 for larger facilities.
What is the difference between IP and analog CCTV systems?▼
IP cameras offer higher resolution, remote access, and advanced features like analytics, while analog systems are more affordable but have lower image quality.
How long is CCTV footage typically stored?▼
Most businesses store footage for 30-90 days, depending on storage capacity, legal requirements, and specific security policies.
Can I access my CCTV cameras remotely?▼
Yes, modern IP-based CCTV systems allow remote viewing through mobile apps and web browsers, enabling 24/7 monitoring from anywhere.
What resolution should I choose for my security cameras?▼
For most commercial applications, 1080p or 4K resolution provides clear identification of people and activities while balancing storage requirements.
