Guest Wi-Fi vs Staff Network
Keep customers off your business systems with separate SSIDs and VLANs.

What matters in practice:
- One shared network lets an infected guest phone reach your POS and cameras — separation fixes that.
- A guest SSID with client isolation suits most small businesses; VLANs scale better as you grow.
- Test after setup: a phone on the guest network must not reach a staff printer or the router admin page.
When customers, staff and business devices share one Wi-Fi network, a single infected phone or curious guest can reach your POS terminal, computers and cameras. Separation fixes that.
Why separate networks matter
- Security: guests cannot see or reach internal devices.
- Performance: you can limit guest bandwidth so customers do not slow payments.
- Control: you can change the guest password without disturbing staff or systems.
Two ways to separate
Guest SSID. Most modern routers offer a built-in guest network with client isolation. It is simple and enough for many small businesses.
VLANs. A VLAN splits one physical network into several logical ones. You might have one for staff, one for POS and mobile money devices, one for CCTV, and one for guests. This needs a router and switches that support VLANs, and is the better choice as you grow.
What to isolate
| Network | Devices | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Staff | Laptops, office phones | Internet and printers |
| Business systems | POS, payment terminals, mobile money devices | Internet only, ideally wired |
| CCTV | Cameras and recorder | Local network, restricted internet |
| Guests | Customer phones | Internet only, isolated |
Setting it up
- Log in to your router or controller.
- Create a guest SSID and enable client or AP isolation.
- Set a different password from your staff network.
- Limit guest bandwidth per device, for example a fixed cap so streaming does not drown payments.
- If using VLANs, assign each SSID and each switch port to its VLAN, and block traffic between them.
- Test by connecting a phone to the guest network and checking that it cannot reach a staff printer or the router admin page.
Practical tips
- Change the guest password on a schedule and display it on a card.
- Use a clear name such as "BusinessName Guest."
- Consider a simple captive portal if you want terms or a voucher system.
